LONDON CRAFT WEEK 2019Unveiled - The Craftof MillineryHat Exhibition8-10 May 2019London, UKby Rachel Trevor Morgan hat by Noel StewartThis May, milliners Rachel Trevor Morgan, Edwina Ibbotson and Noel Stewart came together once again to curate ‘Unveiled – The Craft of Millinery’ as part of London Craft Week 2019. The exhibition was built on the success of last year with a similar format but with even more emphasis being put on the craft and showing how hats are made. It was a real celebration of the milliners’ skill.hat by Bridget Bailey

The main exhibition comprised 14 of the best British-based milliners, each one having been asked to focus on a different skill – feathers, cut and sew, flowers, etc. The idea was to reveal the different processes involved, tools and ‘working materials’ were displayed with each hat. There was also the addition of an ‘in exhibition’ workroom where visitors were able to see additional hats being made as they would be in a workroom setting.

The three days included an expanded programme of ticketed millineryrelated talks and demonstrations. There were three events each day. Harvy Santos held a masterclass in wirework, Edwina Ibbotson and Bridget Bailey shared insights into their careers and design processes, Paul Stafford from The Season Hats talked about laser cutting and Jo Miller talked about using alternative materials and resin-based millinery. The talks were a huge success with all profits going to The Feltmakers' Livery charitable fund. A private view was held on a previous evening and was attended by press and milliners.

Also on display at the Art Workers’ Guild were this year’s winners of the Feltmakers Design Competition. One of the hats was picked up by the Vogue stylists for a Tim Walker shoot in Mexico. We will keep our fingers crossed that it is used!

Special thanks to all at the ArtWorkers’ Guild who hosted the main exhibition and talks and to The Worshipful Company of Feltmakers for their support. Additional support came from Fenwick. On Friday evening the exhibition transferred to their Bond Street store where it was displayed for the weekend.
