Newmarket July Festival 2019 Milliners’ AwardsBy Ana Pribylova – Ana Bella MillineryThe Moët & Chandon July Festival at Newmarket, UK, hosted its first Milliners’ Awards on Ladies Day, 11 July 2019, with the support of milliner Ana Pribylova from Ana Bella Millinery, a member of the Millinery Association of Australia. Open to hat wearers and professional and nonprofessional milliners alike, over 1000 entries entered into the millinery and best-dressed lady award category. The millinery category was a favourite for upand -coming milliners, with plenty of local UK milliners entering on the day.

First place went to Christine, a client of Olivia Rose Turner, a milliner based in Buckinghamshire. Olivia designed the black straw percher hat to match her client’s dress, a Lulu Guinness kisses dress. The black percher stood out with small red, fluro green and pink laser cut lips, which matched perfectly to the dress, the lips dotted upwards on the crinoline swirls.

Runners up were as follows: -Milliner Georgie Shevki, Le Chapeau Hat, a milliner based in Newmarket, who made a striking feather lotus flower, with colours grading outwards from yellow, orange, fuschia pink to purple. -Maria Cheslin, a client of Dawn Guibert from Guibert Millinery based in Yorkshire. The large sweeping straw brim hat was adorned with handmade blue silk roses, with light blue centre and white brim edge.

Judging was based on craftsmanship, creativity, originality, appropriateness of the hat for a race day out, and the three finalists were awarded a host of prizes. First place was given a year’s subscription to HATalk e-magazine, a $300 voucher for Hat Blocks Australia and a bespoke hat from Ana Bella Millinery. Ana hopes to promote the millinery award to a bigger and better standard each year, with the support of Newmarket Racecourses –a win for highlighting professional/bespoke millinery at the Jockey Club racecourse.
