Winners of the 2019 MAA Design AwardThe theme for the 2019 MAA Design Award hosted by the Millinery Association of Australia was Chiaroscuro, the treatment of light and shade. The winner was Rose Hudson, with a monotone metallic leather crown featuring moulded face silhouettes supported by a wire frame.Second place was presented to Amanda Lyn, with a striking redtailed black cockatoo constructed with raffia hand embroidery against a red buntal disk framed by a floating feather. Lindsay Whitehead was awarded third place, with his stunning hand-dyed sinamay saucer shape featuring an intricate fish constructed of feathers and splashing features on the underside.President of the Association Possum Ball said: “The committee and I are so pleased to present our 2019 Design Award and Student Award entrants that showcase the great talent of the Millinery Association of Australia’s Fellow and Student Members. All the headpieces entered are a great example of the depth and diversity of millinery skills in Australia, ranging from the extremely skilled to the new and emerging.”The Millinery Association of Australia Patron Stephen Jones selected Jo Peterson as his choice to the inaugural Patron’s Choice Award. Cynthia Jones Bryson was selected as the People’s Choice, as voted by the public through the Association’s website.The competition was judged by Millinery Association President Possum Ball, creative stylist Virginia Dower, creative director and presenter Philip Boon and Hat Magazine editor Lauren Ritchie.
